Drum set lessons
Drum lessons in Austin
Drums are a specialty at Drum Lessons Austin. Most of our students study drum set, some alongside another instrument, and we have five drum set instructors. Lessons for kids, teens and adults start with what you want to play and grow from there: grooves, fills, favorite songs, and playing with other musicians.
What drum lessons look like here
- Learn on a professional quality acoustic kit or an electronic drum set, both available at both locations
- Explore different styles: rock, funk, pop, country, reggae, Latin grooves, jazz and world music, plus double bass drum pedal technique
- Try hand percussion too, like congas and djembe, and African and Brazilian rhythms
- Learn to read music for drum set, including real charts of your favorite bands’ songs
- Learn the grooves and fills of the songs you love
- Practice at home with our curriculum on Songsterr and our own rhythm apps
- Join our band program: rehearse with other students and perform at Austin venues and on our own stage
- Record in our studio
Who drum lessons are for
Young beginners (some students start as early as age five), teens who want to start or join a band, and adults who want to learn the drums or get back behind the kit.
Drum Dojo, our drum curriculum
Our curriculum is based on finding the right blend between working on fundamentals and technique and the joy of playing along with favorite songs. Every student gets their own balance, based on learning style, age and aptitude.
Many of our teaching resources are homemade. Since 2011, teachers and students have written songs together, and those songs and recordings have become part of our curriculum.
Learning through songs

For elementary age students, our curriculum focuses on learning songs rather than teaching only from a book. We have a complete song-based curriculum that takes students from the very beginning basics through intermediate level play.
When students are ready, they can learn any song of their choice. Teachers help students find charts using our Songsterr account, so students can read real music from their favorite bands and play it in lessons and at home.
Teens and adults usually start with some of the basics and technique in Limb Weaver, our homemade drumming app, and then learn songs just like the younger students. Learning songs is for everyone.
Practice at home
We have a few online resources that make it easy for drummers to practice between lessons.
Our curriculum on Songsterr
Drum Dojo, our own drum curriculum, is hosted on songsterr.com, and our teachers use our Songsterr account to find charts of the songs students want to learn.
Our own rhythm apps
Both apps were designed by Ross Carnes, founder and owner of We Love Music and a drum teacher here. They are still in development phase but work well enough for students to use at home. Enjoy!

Limb Weaver
A powerful tool for developing limb independence and coordination, for any style of music a student wants to learn.

Rhythm Farm
A learning app that teaches students to read rhythms, which is essential for learning any instrument, not just drums. Its playful farm theme turns notes into fruits and other produce, so learners connect words they already know with the rhythms they are learning. Students can even connect a drum pad to a tablet or laptop and play along. The app gauges playing accuracy and adjusts tempo and difficulty to keep each student in the learning zone, not too easy and not too hard.
Open Rhythm FarmBoth work best on a computer, and your progress is saved on the device you use.
